DailyGood: The Professional Development Ethic

February 22, 2011

All motion is cyclic. It circulates to the limits of its possibilities and then returns to its starting point. — Robert Collier

Tip of the Day:
“The notion that one can do anything is liberating. But life without constraints has also proved a recipe for endless searching, endless questioning of aspirations. It has made this generation obsessed with self-development and determined, for as long as possible, to minimise personal commitments in order to maximise the options open to them… At what point, though, does the experience-seeking end?” Reflecting on professional development in an age of possibility, Thomas Barlow proposes a counterintuitive solution: “Perhaps living life to the fullest is as much about closing possibilities than creating them.” http://www.dailygood.org/more.php?n=4464

February 21, 2011

Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe. — Gail Devers

Inspiration of the Day:
Philippe Croizon lived a rather normal life with his family until a severe electric shock accident led to the amputation of all four of his limbs. Undeterred by his handicap, Philippe decided to swim the English Channel and eventually went on to become the first quadruple amputee to achieve the feat. Watch how Philippe prepared himself for this remarkable challenge! http://www.dailygood.org/more.php?n=4383

Smile Newsletter: The Kindness I See

“After the verb “to love,” the verb, “to help” is the most beautiful verb in the world.” — Bertha Von Suttner
Idea of the Week
120.jpg“I am a special education teacher in a primary school. I try to teach the childrenin my class about kindness and compassion. I reward random acts of kindness that happen in my classroom. When a student does something to help one of their peers, out of the goodnes of their heart, I will acknowledge it and let them go in to my ‘kindness box’ to pull out a little surpise. The students get excited when someone is recognized for being kind and they congratulate that child for caring enought to help someone else. It is amazing how the children in my classroom are always well behaved and have a caring nature from just being kind.” — mpg85

Comment of the Week
“I feel that kindness should be every day not just once a year or for the Holidays. Every day is a good day to help put a smile on someone’s face. There are chances daily, to buy someone a hot meal, coffee, help them with a bill, babysit, donate gently used clothes. Buying tickets for a needy family to the circus, all sort of ideas are out there, and not just during the giving season once per year…” — Awannabeangel
What is a “smile card”? It’s a game of kindness — do something nice for someone and leave a card behind asking them to pay it forward. To date, 891,847 cards have been shipped without any charge.

DailyGood: Change Your Life with a Thank-You Note

February 19, 2011

The only people with whom you should try to get even are those who have helped you. — John E. Southard

~~~~
Inspiration of the Day:
It all started three years ago. John Kralik’s life was really going down the tubes, personally and professionally, when one day, while walking, he heard an inner voice telling him to start writing thank you notes. So he sent a note of appreciation to his daughter’s piano teacher. And then to the woman who cuts his hair. And the barista at the coffee shop, just for trying to remember his name. By the end of that year, John had written 365 thank-you notes. He’s even written a book about how they have changed his fortune. http://www.dailygood.org/more.php?n=4462
Dalai Lama Quote from Snow Lion Publications
Dalai Lama Quote of the Week
At the beginning of the process of deity meditation and mantra repetition one meditates on emptiness, settling the non-inherent existence of oneself and the deity through a reasoning such as that of dependent-arising–the fact that both oneself and the deity arise in dependence on their respective bases of designation. One’s own final nature and the final nature of the deity are the same, an emptiness of inherent existence.
To perform deity yoga one does not just withdraw ordinary appearances and then appear as a deity but causes the mind realising emptiness itself to appear as a deity. Thus, it is essential initially to meditate on emptiness, cleansing all appearances in emptiness. One then uses that wisdom consciousness realising emptiness as the basis of emanation of a divine body. This must be done at least in imitation of a consciousness actually doing this, for meditation on a truly existent divine body, instead of helping, will only increase adherence to inherent existence. Meditated properly, the appearance of a divine figure is the sport of the ultimate mind of enlightenment, first in imitation and later in fact. (p.39)
Video of the Week: Chewing Gum Art (from the Heart)
2165.jpg Chewing Gum Art (from the Heart)
Artist Ben Wilson produces amazing pieces of art that are free and accessible to the public…using old chewing gum litter on the sidewalk as his canvas. The work is laborious, painstaking, and intricate. It is a true labor of love and a selfless gift to his community. Ben hopes that neighbors noticing his work will develop a sense of belonging and responsibility to the community, which hopefully will reduce tendencies to litter. At the very least, it’s a very unique way to brighten someone’s day!
DailyGood: London’s Cycle Superhighways Hailed as a Success
February 18, 2011
Get a bicycle. You will not regret it. — Mark Twain
~~~~
Good News of the Day:
Transport for London say the two new Superhighways have been a big success, with an average usage increase of 70%. The traffic on these Superhighways, which connect parts of London to the financial City, is bicycles. Mayor of London’s transport advisor, Kulveer Ranger, said: “This research shows that people do believe the routes are of value, make them feel safer, and are allowing them to take direct and continuous routes into central London.” Two more cycling routes will open this summer. http://www.dailygood.org/more.php?n=4428

Dharma Quote from Snow Lion Publications

Dharma Quote of the Week

If one could attain the state of perfect buddhahood that is free from all faults, that sees directly all aspects of the qualities to be cultivated and faults overcome in the quest for enlightenment, and that is physically adorned with the marks and signs of perfection, the mere perception of which is beneficial, then one would be beyond the distinction of feeling attraction or aversion toward the infinite sentient beings. One would regard all beings with an equal compassion, and would have the ability to really benefit them. Think, “I should make every effort to attain this all-beneficial state.”

In brief, the motivation should be, “For the ultimate benefit of the sentient beings, who are as infinite as the sky is vast, I must attain the state of a peerless, perfect, pure buddha.” This is the aspirational aspect of the bodhimind.
