With a Handful of Flowers November 5, 2012 – Posted by Heavensto
I have performed many acts of kindness in the past, but recently I became the receiver!

One day, while walking down the street with my dogs, I noticed a young girl with a small handful of flowers walking towards me. She approached me and asked about my Chihuahuas.

We chatted for awhile.

Then, she asked if she could give me a flower.

It was a small gesture, but it made my day so much brighter. She seemed so at peace with herself. Her calm energy flowed to me and I felt good all day.

It is so great to know that kindness can happen at any age.

Quote of the Week | Buddha-nature and Enlightenment

Dharma Quote of the Week

BUDDHA-NATURE AND ENLIGHTENMENT

Enlightenment is not anything new or something we create or bring into existence. It is simply discovering within us what is already there. It is the full realization of our intrinsic nature. In Tibetan, buddha is sang gyay. Sang means that all of the faults have been cleared away, while gyay means “full realization”; just as from darkness, the moon waxes, likewise from ignorance, the qualities of the mind’s intrinsic nature emerge.

—Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche

The Healing Power of Poetry

Should I get lost, just point me in the direction of a poem.

– Betty Bleen –

The Healing Power of Poetry

“”I never could connect with poetry,” Jan said. “I’m a math teacher!” She was sitting on my living room couch surrounded by piles of poetry books. On the coffee table was a stack of cards, each with a different poem on it. Even some of the art on the wall had hand-calligraphed verses among the colors….Jan’s glance fell on a stack of Mary Oliver’s books, and tears came to her eyes. “A few years ago, when I started teaching at my current job, the first friend I made was Rita, an English teacher and a poet. I confessed to her my inability to understand poetry. With a knowing look in her eye, she said, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll take care of that!'” { read more }

Are You As Busy As You Think You Are?

When we do not do the one thing we ought to do, we have no time for anything else — we are the busiest people in the world.

– Eric Hoffer –

Are You As Busy As You Think You Are?

“There was a time, not so long ago, when I was busy, busy, busy. At least I thought I was. I told people I worked 60 hours a week. I claimed to sleep six hours a night. As I lamented to anyone stuck next to me at parties, I was basically too busy to breathe. Me time? Ha! Now I work 45 hours a week and sleep close to eight hours a night. But I’m not getting any less done.” This Wall Street Journal article shares more. { read more }

One Simple Wish

Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change. Kindness that catches us by surprise brings out the best in our natures.

– Bob Kerrey –

One Simple Wish

When Danielle Gletow adopted her daughter Mia, she began to learn about the American foster care system — and the challenges faced by more than 100,000 children and young adults who are part of it. Determined to do something to help them, Ms. Gletow made it her mission not only to educate others about the challenges these children and teens face, but also to give people an easy way to lend a helping hand. That’s how One Simple Wish was born. Founded in 2008 out of Gletow’s home office, One Simple Wish is a nonprofit organization that connects foster children and vulnerable families with potential donors.The wishes, which typically cost from $5 to $100 to grant, encompass everything from a desire for a musical instrument to a movie ticket, new clothes, or horseback riding lessons. { read more }

WE ARE ALL THE SAME

We are all human beings, and from this point of view, we are the same. We all want happiness and we do not want suffering. If we consider this point, we will find that there are no differences between people of different faiths, races, colors, or cultures. We all have this common wish for happiness.

The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us

If you want to build a ship, dont drum up the people to collect wood and dont assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea

– Antoine de Saint-Exupery –

The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us

Watch this fascinating talk visually unfold before you through witty and beautiful illustration. Dan Pink makes the case that there are hidden truths behind what really motivates us. Kindness Daily: A Hug For A Non-Huggy Person

A Hug For A Non-Huggy Person November 1, 2012 – Posted by whitby98
I have a co-worker whose husband is in hospital awaiting a heart transplant.

He’s been sick for a long time, and lately his situation has become more delicate. My co-worker has been trying to keep it all together – working full-time, taking care of her two teenagers, and driving three hours each way to visit her husband in the hospital.

One day she snapped at something I said, but I just let it go. She obviously felt bad about it and later e-mailed me to apologize. I told her it was okay, that I know she was dealing with a lot.

A couple of hours later I passed by her office and went in to make sure she was okay. I said, "I would like to give you a hug, if you want one."

I didn’t think she would because she’s not a touchy-feely type of person. Surprisingly she said she would like that. That brief physical contact seemed to calm her down a bit and she thanked me.

If nothing else, at least she knew someone cared.

6-Year-Old Nico: Halloween's Real Life Hero

Sometimes the little opportunities that fly at us each day can have the biggest impact.

– Danny Wallace –

6-Year-Old Nico: Halloween’s Real Life Hero

“Six-year-old Nico Castro from California isn’t letting his battle with brain cancer affect his spirit of giving this Halloween. After his doctor gave him the green light to go trick-or-treating thanks to a break in his chemotherapy, he was jumping for jack-o’-lanterns, what a treat! But here’s where it gets tricky. “Even though he’s worse off than some of these other kids in the hospital, he’s worried about them and thinking –oh they can’t go trick-or-treating and oh they can’t get candy,” said Nico’s mother, Marlene Castro.” What follows is a beautiful story of how one brave little boy’s compassion led to a tidal wave of generosity this Halloween. { read more }
