World Kindness Week Day 3- A 100 Days Of Kindness November 15, 2012 – Posted by clover
Yesterday I made a decision to do an act of kindness every day for 100 days and write it on a chart. It can be something really small. No sooner had I made my decision than an opportunity came along.

I saw a little girl lose the ribbon from her hair. He mum didn’t notice. I ran over, picked it up and went running after them. I gave the mum the ribbon and she gave me something – a lovely smile.

I think it will be fun looking for opportunities to be kind.

Your Health Is Bigger Than Your Body

Excellence in health means devoting your life to ending poverty.

– Patch Adams –

Your Health Is Bigger Than Your Body

“Talking with Dr. Ted Schettler is probably unlike any conversation you have had with your physician. Raise the topic of diabetes or dementia, and Schettler starts talking about income disparities, industrial farming, and campaign finance reform. The Harvard-educated physician, frustrated by the limitations of science in combating disease, believes that finding answers to the most persistent medical challenges of our time– conditions that now threaten to overwhelm our health care system– depends on understanding the human body as a system nested within a series of other, larger systems: one’s family and community, environment, culture, and socioeconomic class, all of which affect each other. ” { read more }

Kindness Daily: World Kindness Day – Started It Off With Gratitude

World Kindness Day – Started It Off With Gratitude November 14, 2012 – Posted by MakeSomeoneSmile
Hello my kind friends!

Happy World Kindness Day! As today starts World Kindness Week I have dedicated myself to doing at least one kind act each day. Today I decided to focus on sharing my gratitude with many of the folks I appreciate.

So I spent most of the evening sending out notes around the world to people who have helped shape my kindness character. There are some groups behind the scenes here at HelpOthers that work so hard to spread smiles. I sent notes to them, as I do not even know all of the wonderful people out there but I know what they do matters to me! As I wrote each one I felt an enormous amount of gratitude and love for them. It made me feel great and I know will matter to them too.

Many individuals along the way (many of you included) have touched my life in ways you likely do not even know. I am kinder and more inspired thanks to many of you. Thank you all for being a part of this wonderful site and more importantly for spreading kindness in your own special way.

Happy World Kindness Day! 🙂

The Action of Light

Love is something that if you give it away, give it away, you end up having more.

– Malvina Reynolds –

The Action of Light

“The working class daughter of a Jewish mother and Sicilian father, Joan Di Stefano was working to help with the bills at fourteen. A few years later she was “slinging drinks” to pay tuition for her classes at the San Francisco Art Institute. At seventeen, while working at Macy’s in downtown SF, on her lunch-breaks she often visited a bookstore around the corner. That’s where she picked up a copy of Thomas Merton’s No Man Is An Island. As she told me, “I would read a couple of pages and keep thinking about it. So that book always kind of stayed with me.” Joan’s story is unique and over forty years later, her connection with Merton led to quite an astonishing series of events…” { read more }

Kindness Daily: Birthday Party In A Box

Birthday Party In A Box November 13, 2012 – Posted by ziva
Annie, a neighbor’s daughter, was away for her first semester at college this past school year. She is a very sweet girl but just a bit shy. When her birthday month came around I found out she was feeling a bit blue and lonely.

Her family is quite small and finances are tight so there wouldn’t be any birthday visitors.

I wanted to send her a card and maybe a small gift to brighten her day a bit. I got her school address from her Mom and planned to simply pick something up and send it. Then I got an idea!

I thought perhaps a bit more birthday cheer was needed here. I bought some balloons, streamers, birthday hats, and other small novelties at a dollar store.

I took a small recorder and asked three other people in my area at work to sing Happy Birthday and send some birthday wishes to her. It was such fun making the recording! Other people found out what we were doing and added their voices, so it really sounded like we had a party going on!

Then I bought her a small present and a card as originally planned.

The real fun was packing it to be sent. I opened the balloons, streamers, etc., and arranged everything so it was like opening a mini birthday party!

At the last minute I added a pack of cupcakes and a box of birthday candles before sending it off!

I got a call a few days later. Annie said her roommate and one of their neighbors in the dorm got together with her and "assembled" the party for her once it arrived. Another girl from down the hall joined them and quite the celebration ensued! She sounded so happy and I was so glad that she had some friends to share her special day with.

It was such an easy and fun thing to do. The people who helped me make the tape still laugh and talk about it. And Annie tells me it was the most fun birthday she can remember!

InnerNet Weekly: Frying the Seeds of Anger

InnerNet Weekly: Inspirations from ServiceSpace.org
Frying the Seeds of Anger
by Swami Vivekananda

[Listen to Audio!]

903.jpgWhen I am angry, my whole mind becomes a huge wave of anger. I feel it, see it, handle it, can easily manipulate it, can fight with it; but I shall not succeed perfectly in the fight until I can get down below to its causes. A man says something very harsh to me, and I begin to feel that I am getting heated, and he goes on till I am perfectly angry and forget myself, identify myself with anger. When he first began to abuse me, I thought, "I am going to be angry". Anger was one thing, and I was another; but when I became angry, I was anger.

These feelings have to be controlled in the germ, the root, in their fine forms, before even we have become conscious that they are acting on us. With the vast majority of mankind the fine states of these passions are not even known – the states in which they emerge from subconsciousness. When a bubble is rising from the bottom of the lake, we do not see it, nor even when it is nearly come to the surface; it is only when it bursts and makes a ripple that we know it is there.

We shall only be successful in grappling with the waves when we can get hold of them in their fine causes, and until you can get hold of them, and subdue them before they become gross, there is no hope of conquering any passion perfectly. To control our passions we have to control them at their very roots; then alone shall we be able to burn out their very seeds. As fried seeds thrown into the ground will never come up, so these passions will never arise.

–Swami Vivekananda, in "Yoga Aphorisms"

Dharma Quote of the Week
November 12, 2012

BECAUSE WE DON’T RECOGNIZE BUDDHA-NATURE

Because we don’t recognize our essential nature—we don’t realize that although appearances arise unceasingly, nothing is really there—we invest with solidity and reality the seeming truth of self, other, and actions between self and others. This intellectual obscuration gives rise to attachment and aversion, followed by actions and reactions that create karma, solidify into habit, and perpetuate the cycles of suffering. This entire process needs to be purified.

Kindness Daily: Reverse Birthday Gift

Reverse Birthday Gift November 10, 2012 – Posted by denisemj
Today I was blessed to turn forty-five years young.

I enjoy reading all of the awesome ideas from this wonderful site about people giving on their birthday, so, I decided this would be my chance to experience the joy of giving on my special day.

My husband took me to the Olive Garden, and our waitress was very nice. We had a great dinner experience and then I tried a warm apple crostata that was scrumptious. Then the waitress, Carlini, brought our bill.

When she came back to the table to get our credit card I knew it was my time to give. I sat the gift bag on the edge of the table and simply said, "In honor of my birthday, I want to bless you with a gift."

Ohh, the shock on her face! She said, "No, not for me! It’s your birthday!" Then she said, "Can I open it in front of you?" And I said that would be fine.

The first thing she noticed was the color of the gift bag which was purple. Purple is her favorite color and she actually had a purple tie on!

She opened the card and said, "It’s Christmas in July."

As she was taking the gift out of the bag, she said she was excited. It’s wonderful to give to someone who is willing to receive! She opened the box and saw it was a purple mug that said, "Tip Top Server – Happy to be a beverage serving, order taking, rushed off my feet, tip collecting, server! Inside the cup was a Smile card and forty-five dollars, a dollar for each year of my life.

After seeing the money she looked at my husband and said you do not have to leave a tip. He just ignored and left her the tip anyway.

Carlini was so grateful and thankful for what she had received. She said we made her year. I thanked her for receiving my gift so beautifully.

I am thankful to God for another year of life and the opportunity to see that every day is a great day to give.
